UK-Germany-Italy-Macedonia, 2001, 124 min, color

At the dawn of the last century in the American West, two brothers fall in love with the same woman. Lilith chooses the younger brother, Elijah. The embittered other brother, Luke, travels alone to Europe. His demons drive him to Macedonia, where he becomes a ruthless mercenary among numerous local gangs fighting viciously. The local revolution, however, takes on a personal face when pregnant Neda saves the dying Luke.
"After his 1994 triumph in Venice when he won the Golden Lion Award for his feature debut "Before the Rain", it seemed that in the years to follow luck had abandoned Manchevski. He was the original director chosen for the projects "Three Kings" and "Ravenous". As in "Before the Rain", he plays with the plot's structure, leaving the audience guessing before connecting the different stories together. The director admits that the idea came when he found out that Macedonian rebels and the Mexican rebels of Pancho Villa had been dressed in almost the same way."
