Germany-Austria-Switzerland-Russia-France-Japan-Tajikistan, 1999, 106 min, color A strange family lives in a Tadjik village. Safar, the father, is a widower and sole supporter of the family. Nasreddin, the son, will forever be traumatized by the war in Afghanistan. Mamlakat, the daughter, dreams of becoming an actress. One night a supernatural and mysterious force impregnates her; the villagers are deeply mistrustful of her pregnancy. Safar and Nasreddin thus decide to turn the whole region inside out in order to find the father of Mamlakat's unborn baby.

"Bakhtiar Khudojanazarov's film is a pure delight, mingling the surreal and poetical effervescence of Kusturica's cinema with a more sober and very touching observation of life in the ex-Soviet republics of Central Asia, where everything seems to be running wild in a complete lawless flurry, while cultural traditions still retain their hold over individuals."
