The new media have been readily embraced by Peter Greenaway, an iconoclastic filmmaker who, along with Godard and Figgis, rejects the naturalist conventions of mainstream cinema. The Tulse Luper Suitcases project will use five media: at least three feature-length films, television, numerous DVDs, the Internet and books. The story covers six decades, a period Greenaway refers to as the Uranium Years: from the discovery of uranium in Colorado in 1928 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Ninetytwo suitcases (after the atomic number of uranium) will be opened, twenty-one of them in the first part of the project, The Moab Story.
"The film starts in South Wales with ten-yearold Tulse Luper – a character known from Greenaway's previous work, with sporadic appearances in his short films and most recently in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover – being locked up by his father for signing his name on a collapsing brick wall. Luper is a young dreamer, a writer and 'projectmaker.' Later, his voyages take him to Moab in the Utah desert."
